Asbestos Training

Asbestos training for professionals engaged in asbestos-related activity is required under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan (MAP). The MAP mandates the use of accredited asbestos professionals when conducting asbestos work activity at schools and public and commercial buildings. It provides guidance to states on the minimum asbestos training requirements for the following asbestos certifications

 

Collecting and Analyzing Asbestos Air Samples (a NIOSH 582 equivalent)

This course is designed for individuals responsi­ble for evaluating airborne asbestos exposure to workers and the environment during work operations covered under the OSHA asbestos standards.

  • Sampling and calibration equipment
  • Airborne asbestos sampling strategies
  • Microscope calibration and adjustment
  • Sample preparation and fiber counting
  • Quality control practices and procedures

 Virginia Project Monitor 

This course provides 16 hours of training for persons conducting visual inspections and final clearance sampling on asbestos abatement projects in the state of Virginia. Successful completion of an approved Supervisor or Project Designer Course is a prerequisite.

 Asbestos Abatement Worker       

This 32-hour training course is required for workers involved in the abatement of asbestos-containing building materials. It includes extensive use of practical scenarios and hands-on exercises.

 Asbestos Abatement Supervisor 

This 40-hour initial training course is designed for on-site supervisors of asbestos abatement operations.  The course includes background information presented in the Asbestos Abatement Worker Course plus the following topics:

  • Understanding work specifications
  • Effective site supervision
  • Insurance and liability issues
  • Recordkeeping requirements

Asbestos Building Inspector 

This 24-hour course emphasizes the proper methods to identify, sample and document the presence of asbestos-containing building materials.

  • Physical assessment techniques
  • Recordkeeping and report writing

 Asbestos Management Planner 

This 16-hour training course emphasizes the assessment of potential asbestos exposure, appropriate response actions and the preparation and implementation of the plan to manage the asbestos-containing building materials.  Successful completion of an Asbestos Building Inspector Course is a prerequisite.

Asbestos Project Designer 

This 24-hour course is required for all individuals who will design any asbestos abatement projects or write asbestos abatement plans. Classroom presentations and realistic case study scenarios provide participants with a solid foundation for developing responsible and efficient asbestos abatement project designs, specifications and work plans. This course is required for any design or abatement plan over three (3) square feet or three (3) linear feet. This course meets the AHERA, ASHARA and TSCA Title II Accreditation for project designers. An ATC certificate is provided for each student upon successful completion of the course.

 Operations and Maintenance Worker    

This 16-hour course is designed for building service and maintenance personnel who are likely to come into contact with asbestos-containing materials during routine maintenance activities.

  • Small scale cleanup and removal

Asbestos Awareness 

This 2-hour course is designed for building personnel who are likely to work in the vicinity of asbestos-containing materials during routine maintenance activities. This course is informational only and does not allow for any disturbance of the asbestos-containing materials.

 Building Inspector Review    

This 4-hour review course is designed to meet the requirements for the recertification of Asbestos Building Inspectors. The course includes a review of topics from initial training with particular attention to new regulations and state-of-the-art procedures.

 Building Inspector/Management Planner Review      

These two, 4-hour back to back review courses are designed to meet the requirements for the recertification of asbestos Building Inspectors and Management Planners.  They include a review of topics from initial training with particular attention to new regulations and state-of-the-art procedures.

This 8-hour course is an annual update of key topics from initial training for individuals responsible for preparing asbestos project specifications and addenda.

This 8-hour course is a review and update of initial Project Monitor course topics.

Asbestos Single Media

This 8-hour Asbestos Single Media course covers the regulations and requirements for any contractor who may disturb Class II non-friable asbestos containing materials.  The course covers the OSHA 1926.1101 standard and any asbestos standards that would apply.
